It is so good to see Snarry Games finally begin! And I frankly can not imagine any greater gift than the opening fic by Meri - Escaping the Paradox. It's time-travel and young!Severus and adult!Harry and it's bloody perfect!

Yay! And there are so many more to come! Perfica, Cluegirl, Amanuensis, Gingertart50, Josan, RaeWhit, Svartalfur, The ConCept, Ac1d6urn & Sinick, BethH, Dementor Delta, Femme, Pir8fancier, Vain - to name only few of my favorites!

It's just a relief for all the stress I've been under for the last few weeks.

It seems I will be spending winter semester in Indiana (Bloomington) - I got a scholarship in the US.. Oh my:-) I've no idea what to expect. Even regarding the weather. It's all going to be an awfully big adventure.

I have been reading quite a lot lately, catching up on Merry Smutmas and painless_j's recs. I'm posting the list of fics I have enjoyed most, for future reference. Quite a few new authors have emerged lately, I can't believe I have never read anything by RaeWit or gingertart50 before!

Echoes, by gingertart50

Everyone has been given perfume for Christmas, odd things happen as a result and Harry finds himself juggling match-making children, senile household appliances and two very fraught relationships.
###
Amazing take at post-DH Harry and Snape. And Albus Severus rocks my socks!

To Cause A Hundred Veils to Fall, by reddwarfer

Harry wishes for so many things.
###
How to make a Snarry DH compliant, fitting even into the timeline? Very interesting take, and emotionally beautiful!

Being Snape, by gingertart50

When Harry Polyjuices into Snape, he finds out more about the Potions master than he ever dreamed.
###

Post-DH. Very intense, wonderfully written and througoutly believable. The ending is heart-wrenching and yet gives one so much hope. A must!

Himself His Own Dungeon, by Beth H

Snape isn't quite as dead as everyone thinks. Neither is Voldemort.
#

Interesting but unsettling. And I'm not sure about the way Ginny is portrayed in post-DH fics, this one being one of the nasty ones.

No Place At All, by Acid

Written with Acid (ac1d6urn), in response to Snakeling's prompt "I'd like it if Snape had long-term consequences to his health from his run-in with Nagini". Part of the 2007 fic and art fest in the InsaneJournal community Snarry_Holidays.
###

Post-DH. Snape joins the circus, Harry leaves the Wizarding World. Amazing atmosphere, one get utterly immersed in the reality so alternate and yet absolutely convincing. Wonderful read.

In Medias Res, by reddwarfer

Harry learns that to reconstruct he must deconstruct. He could have never predicted that the process would include Jean Paul Sartre, Snape naked, and Hell on Earth.
#
Interesting and well written, adventure for body and mind:-)

Occam's Razor, by joanwilder (RaeWit)

Two years after the end of the war, only desperation could make Harry seek out the help of a one-time enemy.
###

After this and Sansa's fic I'm certainly starting to develop a portrait! Snape kink. This is a very long, wonderfully written and heart-wrenching fic with amazing portrayal of Snape, Harry and Draco. Stories like this one make me, a faithful believer in a Church of Snarry, want to go & find some good Harry/Draco. But, hey, Snape/Harry growing relationship is the real thing here:-)

Disenchanted by Cluegirl

#
Snape rescues Harry from Dursleys. Cat! Harry learns to trust Snape, romance ensues. Well written and hot:-)

Throwaways, by Raewhit

Disposable and dispensable…one a villain, one a hero. Severus and Harry share more than they ever would've imagined.
###

It is a very touching story putting emphasis on the development of relationship and finding emotional likeness. Very good.

On Sure Foundation, by Chazpure

Pairings: Godric/Salazar, Severus/Harry, Albus Severus/Scorpius In Albus Severus Potter's Seventh Year at Hogwarts, he discovered something magical, something scary and exhilarating, something he isn't sure he can tell anyone else about-- oh, and that odd manuscript of Salazar Slytherin's was kind of neat, too...
#

I think I rather like the idea of Albus Severus/Scorpius pairing, it has potential to get the best out of Harry, Severus and Draco. Nice read.

Reconciling Lily's Eyes, by persepolis130

Had Harry known bonding with his former professor would lead him to three different countries, a hastily-planned wedding and his pants around his ankles in Snape's sitting room, he wouldn't have quit his day job. Or... maybe he would've...
#

As painless_j has said, this is a sort of fic that grows on you. Snape is nasty and portrayed in all his disgusting glory (even though Nym's Snape still rules in this domain), Harry is more than unstable, Ginny's a bitch, Hermione is more than annoying, sex is awkward and ugly. None of the things I usually like - or, rather, all of those things, but so pronounced that they become a caricature. And yet, this fic grows on you. Really, it's annoying but you can't stop reading it. So, go and see for yourself.

A Glow of Candlelight by gingertart50

Is there a reason why Harry dreams of Snape in the glow of candlelight? Harry leaves his tools and his potter's wheel behind to find out.

###
Gingertart50 has certainly become one of my favorite writers, right next in the ranks to Aucta Sinistra, Dementor Delta, Jay Tryfanstone, Raewit, Cluegirl, Stella Hobbit, Tira Nog and AbstractConcept. Her fics are gentle and with just the right amount of angst, believable depictions of characters and relationships slowly unfolding being great strengths of her writing. I loved this one, another fic about Harry being haunted by memories of Snape, expressing his feelings through art (which sounds quite awful but really, there's been too many good fics playing with this idea) and finding a way to grant his greatest wish. Beautiful.

Every time I watch War and Peace (whether it is the 1956 version with Audrey Hepburn or the new TV-mini series) I can't help but long for some nice fan fiction with alternate ending for Andrei and Natasha. I like Pierre alright but he just doesn't have it in him and Andrei needs to be written as someone more than killing machine/alpha male/turned Christian.

2007 version: Alessio Boni was very good as Andrei. A bit like Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice, and you know what I mean by that;-) He was the best when he went into the "romantic hero" mode, I really couldn't stop falling for him - but then he would start going on and on about the war and serving one's country. Oh well. And then about the art of forgiveness which was wonderful when applied to Natasha, but a bit worse when he started about the whole mankind. But that's Tolstoy for you;-)

Just a major irk. But I guess War and Peace isn't popular enough to have an English-speaking fandom... *sigh*

Alright, alright, coming back to the male/male stuff;-)

BTW - has anyone else besides me simply adored Septimus in Stardust? For many reasons, not the least of them being his resemblance to the one and only SS:) And his morbidness! Ah. The film is really worth watching, by the way - I can't say how serious it was intended to be but I had so much fun watching it (OMG, Robert DeNiro as bent Captain Shakespeare! And Jason Flemyng! Dexter Fletcher!) yesterday. I was like *you've got to be kidding me* all the time. And interior design was very much like Harry Potter, don't you think?

ETA: Oh my GOD. Oh my FUCKING God. I found an Andrei/Pierre War and Peace slash fic on ff.net. This is sooo wrong.

Still no Andrei/Natasha anywhere, though.

Young Severus Snarry fanfics

Harry meeting and falling in love with young Snape has always been one of my favorite kinks - this idea has been featured in quite a few time-travel fics but, much to my disappointment, also quite frequently abused. I don't know why it is so hard to find a good Young!Severus/Harry fic - maybe because this idea calls for too many clichés, or maybe because it attracts less experienced writers - hard to say.

I have started compiling a list of Snarry fics involving Harry and young Severus in love (so I am not interested in every fic involving young Severus, in flashbacks or otherwise, no matter how good it is - BTW, go and read Two Lockets by Acid and Sinick if you haven't already). I will welcome all the suggestions:-)

### - fics that I find particularly worth reading
# - liked, but no fireworks

Please note: the impressions I share reflect my tastes only - if I didn't like the fic, it doesn't mean that it won't become your favorite piece of all times, right?:-)

Escaping the Paradox by Meri.
###
After Harry is thrown back in time to 1971, he has several choices to make.
Wonderful read and very good character portrayal. I find this development of young Snape very convincing in the changed timeline. It is good to see how the typical Snarry dynamics is reversed here and yet it rings the same bell somehow. Endearing.

Cockroach Clusters, Please by Ziasudra.
#
Harry needs to learn how to construct new spells, he turns to the Half-Blood Prince for assistance; they meet in the Room of Requirement.
I like the young Severus' portrayal but there's quite a lot of clichés.

Just Another Soldier in the War by Ziasudra.
#
Harry goes back in time, takes the name of Charlus Potter and joins a DE squad. His relationship with twenty-something Snape develops, with all the expected ups and downs.
Lots of action but the main characters seem to be a bit underdeveloped.

Between the Lines by Dementor Delta.
###
Harry corresponds with the Half-Blood Prince through his book, romance ensues. Very good, young Snape heart-broken after cease-correspondence and adult Snape learning to accept the turn of events and cooperate.
One word: perfect. Both in emotional intensity and characters' portrayal.

The Return of the Prodigal by Lachesis.
#
A portkey goes wrong and Harry goes back in time to Marauders' era. He goes under a name of one Harold James and is sorted in Slytherin.

A Nick in Time, by Tira Nog.
###
Harry and Snape are turned into 7-year-olds and learn to like each other.
Very good. Continued in Growing Pains, but this one gets a bit too hurt/comfort for my tastes.

Tread Softly by Dius Corvus.
###
Harry kills Voldemort and is thrown back in time to Marauders' time. He is known under the name of one Jonathan Frost and becomes friends with Severus Snape.
Continued in Ashes of Time, WIP. I like this fic, it's probably the best one in the series of Harry thrown back in time.

The Living Years by Dementor Delta.
###
Severus Snape makes the ultimate sacrifice for Harry Potter. No, not that sacrifice! The other one! And finds Sanctuary in the most unexpected of places. Severus growing up while Harry grows older.
I didn't enjoy it as much as other Dementor Delta's fics - probably because the pairing of older Harry and much younger Snape isn't really my thing - but it's still a must-read.

Tapestry of Fate by the-minx-17.
Harry goes back in time to change Snape's fate and to give him a fair shake at a happier, more fulfilling life.

Indebted by Elanora.
#
A trip in time reveals Harry to be unknowingly involved in Snape's past, and inextricably linked to his future.
Very short appearance of young Severus, but all in all worth reading.

Hogwarts takes care of its own by leela_cat.
#
Post-DH. Snape is dying at St. Mungo's. Harry goes back in time.
A nice read.

Unexpected by Seeker.
#
An age-reversal spell goes awry in battle, leading to unexpected consequences. PWP.
De-aged Snape, Harry and lots of sex - overall hot, but one can't help a few "Err, I don't think it should be working this way" and "Ack! This really is a bit much for me". So be warned;-)

A Time to Change by Sansa.
Harry wishes he had had different life and enters alternate reality in which Neville is the Boy Who Lived. He develops a relationship with adult Snape but still needs to go back in time to find the way to win the future war.
I appreciate how complicated the whole concept of time is but the description of most of the characters qualifies as something I rather abhor (starting with "Siri" and "Sev").

The Paradox of Existence by DragonLight.
###
Adult Harry goes back in time to the Marauders' era to teach DADA, taking the name of Octavian Tyler.
This is truly a magnificent fic. Very long and pretty much flawless. The portrayal of characters is perfect - I've given up on this fic many times because of the way young Severus is depicted in the first two chapters but this piece is not about young Severus at all and it is the tension between the young and the adult Snape that is the main highlight here. And there are many: the way Draco's and Harry's friendship is depicted makes me want to do something I have long deemed unthinkable - read a Harry/Draco fic:-) Harry is very believable and it's such an adventure to watch him when he is a teenager taking his first step in relationship and an adult doing his best to sustain it. The concept of time is nothing less than interesting. So. Yeah. Go and read it NOW:-)

The Swing by Svartalfur.
#
Severus is waiting for his friend to return to the playground, Harry wants to find out everything about Lily, and the Healers at St. Mungo's are at a loss to explain Snape's condition.
A very interesting take at young!Severus/Harry relationship WITHOUT time-travel. Well written, characters are well developed and believable. I really enjoyed it.

All in Good Time by Alisanne.
Prompt: How about a time travel romance, with young Snape accidentally coming forward to the future, and Adult Harry having to take charge of him until they sort out what made it all happen.

I liked the young Severus, even though I find the plot and time-travel explanations quite far-fetched and simplified. Still, a nice read.

Tempus Reversit by ms_katonic.

When a magical accident in the heat of battle sends Harry and Snape back to 1943, it's a golden opportunity for a fresh start. But destiny is not so easy to escape, especially when Tom Riddle starts taking an interest...

Aude Sapere by Tiger of the Fire

Harry Potter, the boy-who-defeated-Voldemort, has been in Azkaban for the last ten years for using an Unforgivable. Now he has managed to escape, yet will he ever be the same? Or will too many things happen to him? But what if something happens to make people think he's escaped, when in reality he didn't do it on purpose?

So, Harry finds himself in the 70-ties at Hogwarts. Absolutely not my style of writing so I wasn't able to read through it. Good luck to you, though;-)

The Young and the Hopeless by moraco

Severus Snape goes forward to the future, meets Harry and is placed in Gryffindor as Simon Edwards.

I'm starting to have difficulties writing neutral things about fics that fall into the category of this list but which I find so much not to my tastes;-) So, sorry - couldn't get further than the third chapter with this one.

One Stupid Person by quixotic-hope

Having lost his value as a spy for the light, Severus must now take a de-aging potion and befriend the dratted Boy-Who-Lived. But what happens when he starts falling in love?

Alright. So Snape takes de-aging potion and befriends Harry under the name of, o! originality of originalities!, Alan Rickman!;-) I have no words, really.

Playing with Existence by daughter_moon

It is the summer after 5th year and Harry Potter is staying at Grimmauld Place. With too much time to think about the past events, he comes up with a plan. A plan involving timeturners, school-age parents and a weakened Dark Lord. But playing with existence can have serious consequences.

All in all, an OK read. I don't like Character Death, though.

Death Eater Takes a Holiday by Lee Lee Potter

Albus spells a few Order members back to their seventh year age, and sends them to spend time at Hogwarts for a holiday. The Headmaster's intent is for them to learn that Harry is indeed mature for his age, so that he will be accepted as a full member. What will happen when Severus returns from his time as a teen, to find he has spent the better part of the week entwined with a certain Gryffindor? And, how do their lives change afterwards?

Read first few chapters but the story is just so... teenage, I guess. I didn't like the characters, I didn't like "talk, dark and sexy" and love at the first sight.

Back to the Future by Jade and Sandy

Harry is longing for Severus but finds the other man unwilling to lose his reservations. He goes back in time to change Severus' attitude.

Nice read, pretty much on the PWP side but still enjoyable.

I'm Already Gone by redfox13

Harry is James' younger brother. All is very teenage.

Haven't read past chapter 3.

Only to Rise Higher by swtalmnd

Snape's life as a student takes a turn he hadn't expected when the Boy Who Lived comes to Hogwarts in Snape's fourth year.

The summary is not accurate as it is more as if Snape came to Harry's times as a teenager. Quite sweet. Nice read.

Please give me more:-)

Alright, so I'm in the middle of going through all videos on YouTube tagged "Snarry". What disturbs me a bit is quite a lot of videos made out of fanart, with no credits and hardly any disclaimer at all (other than "Found it on my hard drive, thought this would look great in a video"). Like this one - there is some pretty amazing artwork and I even recognize some of it, but there is no way I can check and find more because there are no damn authors' names! It's just unfair, you know - both to authors and viewers.

OK, let's calm down.

I found an absolutely wonderful video maker, akemi42, who has done two videos to Snarry Art Games 2006 and 2007 and an amazing Snarry video to The Rasmus' Open my Eyes. It's a must see. There is a story in there, there is emotion, the footage goes really well with lyrics and quality is very good. What is there to want more? [as opposed to vids like this one to NIN's Perfect Drug where we've got very interesting old-black-and-white-movie effect and still it falls apart]

So, please go and see her Oops I Snarried Again , the utterly beautiful Always with lots of young Snape, Gone with the Sin with loads of credited Snape artwork, It's not Canon, Harry which is slightly lighter in tone and has got some very cunning effects showing our beloved characters' closeness.

And, of course: The Snarry Song:-)

It seems that my fannish self has re-awoken again:-)

I'm completing a list of Young!Snape/Harry fics that should be posted soon - need I mention how much fun I am having re-reading all those fics? It has always been one of my favorite themes.

Just to keep you occupied, two fanvid recs that I have enjoyed immensely (both on YouTube):

1.It's OK to be GAY! - a gay anthem for Harry Potter series, ROTFLMAO. Just to remind you the lyrics:

What I've felt,
What I've known,
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free,
Never me,
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free,
Never me,
So I dub thee unforgiven.

You labeled me,
I'll label you.
So I dub the unforgiven.

Yeah.

A time-travel fic, with Harry having amnesia and Severus waiting for him to start remembering. A very nice piece, slowly developing, getting you deeper and deeper into.

Miriam Heddy's What Dire Offence: Harry returns to Hogwarts as a Defense Against Dark Magic teacher, Snape is the only person that is a constant to him. We all know this plot from somewhere, but this one is truly marvelously written. The relationship is developing slowly and realistically, just the way I like it. A must!

Femme's Gladly Beyond Any Experience written for snarry_games Team Romance - Snape is caught by the Ministry and kept under Harry's custody. Harry has a daughter. Snape's mother plays a major part. Oh, how I loved it! Severus's haunting relationship with Draco is heart-breaking! This fic is sad and melancholic and giving hope and optimistic. Another must!

Shhh, because I should be working, going through another stack of books and copying another five hundred scholarly articles on virtual communities, groups of support, social identity on-line discourse and who know what else. It's only that...

It's SO boring here.

I'm on a one month-long scholarship in Leuven, Belgium. Not that Belgium is boring - but I'm all alone here and not really capable of making any friends in the dorm I live in. Don't ask me why, I just can't start going around and talking to people. 'M not the kind of person to make the first move (in this case or general? Probably in general, internet made everything so much easier).

So I don't even have someone to drink this marvelous beer with.

So I'm turning to you again.

So coming back to slash has never been more tempting before.

Maybe I just need a break from academia.
Alright, I'm a hopeless fan of Jane Austen and most of the movies based on her novels. I adored Sense and Sensibility and Emma, liked Mansfield Park and, surprise surprise, adored BBC Pride and Prejudice. I suppose I don't really have to say anything about my feelings towards Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.

Now. You start watching the 2005 movie with a felling "No, not like this, he's not handsome, she's too lively and twittering all the time, I liked THEM more". But then they sort of start to grow on you, first Keira's Elizabeth because she's just irresistible and too beautiful not to love. Then Matthew Macfadyen	as Darcy: first you start with "He's not handsome, but his haircut is nice", then there is that PERFECT scene with his hand closing into a fist after he touches Elizabeth's hand (I really can't believe something this small can convey so much feeling), then you start appreciating the way he moves and the way he wears his clothes, then there are those two amazing scenes when 1) he comes to propose but leaves without really saying anything and 2) when he comes back after being rejected to give Elizabeth the letter. And then you get to see him smile. Which is nothing more than stunning after his being so gloomy.

So.. it was really, really good. Amazing, sometimes. And so much different!

I want to see it again!

*does a happy dance*

Oh well. I watched Jarhead which had some very good moments and pretty amazing shots but left me thinking "MEN and wars" and this thought is both full of despair and pitifulness. And I watched Proof! I'm really enthusiastic about this movie because it has the best Gwyneth Paltrow ever - I have always liked her (even though her icy-coldness always freaks me out a bit) and this role is a continuation of what she did in Sylvia, really. Amazing and - so true? With all the potential women have and waste it beause of children/suffering parents/family in general/household et caetera. Maybe "waste" isn't the right word: it's just women are much more likely to feel a compulsion to actually give in and do what they think their duty is. I think so.

Jake Gyllenhaal's eyes truly are captivating. And wait, I still have Brokeback Mountain to see tonight.

Adult Harry returns to Hogwarts as a Triwizard Tournament organiser, sees Snape again and... you know the alchemy:-) Only it isn't all that simple, because one Lucius Malfoy simply refuses to die and leave Severus and Harry alone. And Severus has issues. It's really well written and actually has plot apart from the romance (which is rare). I like this mature!Harry and ambivalent (tender yet broken and harsh)! Severus. Wonderful read.
