This wouldn't be inaccurate if it didn't come with the newsletter subject "Week of Dec. 1st: Tiger Woods, Holiday Parties, Immaculate Conception": contrary to popular belief, Immaculate Conception doesn't mean that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was conceived, but that she was born without the original sin. Oh well. I got to say this is something I learned during history of art classes at uni, like the fact that, at a certain point, there had been debates within the Catholic Church about whether Mary stayed a virgin forever or had other "regular" children with Joseph. It came up when we were studying a painting by (I think) Titian where Mary had some red piece of clothing and that was an indication that the order that commissioned it (IIRC it was a Franciscan vs. Dominican debate?) was on the "Mary wasn't a virgin anymore" side. Okay, now you can go and use this little bit of trivia on December 8. (on the other hand? this is so fucking true XD what a "meh" year overall.) |

Just hung out with lizardspots, melusinahp and son_of_darkness, plus some other people whose LJ names I don't know. It was awesome. Westminster Abbey was farking amazing. The massiveness of it, and the intricacy and detail of the countless statues and monuments and plaques and tombs... was overwhelming. We also went and saw Avenue Q last night, which I already knew would be fantastic. Stonehenge on Thursday, because even though it isn't nearly as majestic when you can't go right up to it any more, I've wanted to see it in real life for almost 20 years, so damn it, I'm going to see it. I don't really have anything of real interest to add, but I'm having a good time, so... yeah. And, I'm freezing. Brr.

I've been meaning to see The lives of others since its theatrical release, but never got around to do that, and knew that it was going to be good, and now I've seen it on tv and it was good and I'm like, why on Earth have I been waiting almost three years to see it? Always late to the party (or, always late, period). In other news, my sleeping habits are a total mess. Surprise surprise! |

The story isn't done yet and I feel this second part is weaker than the first I wrote in 2007 (the sequel is never like the orginal, etc.) but meanwhile I have achieved this goal... too bad it's the most useless of all my current goals, mwahahah! Better than nothing. Off to dinner now. |

Time to prepare for Holiday cards. I drew a tiger for New Year's cards (for non-fandom friends) today, because 2010 is the year of tiger in Chinese calendar. I also want to draw King Alfred but in that case I have to do some search about Christmas customs in 9th century Wessex. ...I think I wouldn't make it. ( ETA: ideas )(This entry is kinda GIP, lest I forget posting on Dec. 1st.) ETA: You know, it makes you really nostalgic when you see someone's icon whose image is of artists who left fandom sometime ago, isn't it? |

"Thanksgiving’s around the corner, and as we’ve shown in years past, what better way to get into the holiday spirit than with a bunch of super sexy (pseudo) squaws adding a little wood to your totem pole? Sure, not all of these lovely ladies are actual Native Americans, but if you ask us, dressing up in a hot-ass Native American outfit does the job just fine." Uh. No. |

I'm now in London. It's cold, it's windy, but it's fantastic. So is there anyone in the London area *cough lizardspotscough* who would like to meet up? I'm here for the next fortnight before we move on to Cambridge and then northwards. We'll also be through Nottingham, Yorkshire (Leeds and Newcastle in particular), one afternoon in Liverpool so I can see a family monument at the university, and then up to Glasgow, where I'll be staying from Christmas til late February. So anyone else in England who would like to meet up, please tell me and we can totally arrange something. :D We had a 1-hour stop-off in Dubai, and may I just say that it was awesome, all the non-white folks staring at my face with ill-hidden disapproval or outright contempt. Facial piercings are not particularly appreciated over there, no doubt. Though the worst look I got was from a middle-aged British woman with awful bottle-blonde curls. I grinned at her. :D We're off to Westminster Abbey once we're done checking our internet regulars, as the guy we're staying with only just moved into his flat, and thus doesn't yet have internet. But soooon. Okay, better end this one now. Toodle pip. :B

Old sketch I'll probably never finish: ( Draco // 'Pride' )Funny thing is I drew it before HBP and all that business with the mirrors. Then again, not so strange - the boy probably can't help staring into the mirror, HE'S JUST THAT PRET-TEH. XP Hey, so this was fun! Do feel free to toss your hat in if you haven't done so already (friends only). ♥ (It's just a silly meme I cooked up, so those who are here for Teh Pretteh aren't missing out on anything.) |

I know that several of you are doing NaNo; assuming that you're somewhat active in your regional threads, do you ever come across discussions about all or any of these subjects: the usefulness of NaNo on improving yourself as a writer/"is that a competition, I don't like to think of writing as a competition"/general bitching about the rules and principles of the game? Because in the three years I've participated and posted at the Italian forums, this kind of discussion always surfaced and I can't help but rolleye a bit. Firstly, the rules of the game are quite clear, if you want to play, fine, if you don't, it's not like NaNo is the only online writing community/contest. Secondly, maybe my perspective is a bit skewed because I don't want to be a novelist, but what's wrong with doing things just for the fun of it? Why do we have to overanalyze everything? I do NaNo because I think it's fun, albeit in a slightly insane way. That's enough for me. ( Senior citizens have a sense of humor all of their own ) Also, you know what's awesome and sucks at the same time? When you get a firsthand juicy bit of gossip that would make you look soooo cool in certain circles, but you can't use it out of respect for the non-celebrity part involved. Alas! |
